Need Web Design Inspiration? “Steal” From Your Competition!
Web design can be a daunting task for new businesses or anyone creating a website for the first time; from coming up with the design, creating your logo, getting the right photos, writing your web content, to marketing on the search engines.
But if you choose the right web designers and look at those who came before you, then designing your website will be a breeze.
In this post I will share with you three things to remember when looking for web design inspiration from your competition.
1. Your Competition has been there and done that already
If you look at the businesses that have been around for a while, you are guaranteed to find at least 80% of the work already done for you. Whatever they have on their website must be working for them and their marketing.
Find out how they offer their services and how much they charge. Take advantage of this information because to get where they are today they have done a lot of trial and error and research.
2. It' s Easier To Find Weaknesses in Your Competition's Work
It's always easier to find weaknesses in other people's work than finding them in our own work. Therefore you need to use this as leverage and make your website and products or services better than your competition.
Go through their websites, take note of what you like about their websites and where they are doing poorly so that you can implement them better on your website. Some of the things to look for are; how easy it is to find information on their site, the language they use on their website copy, what actions they encourage the customers to take on their website among others. However don't just copy exactly what they are doing.
3. Your Competition Shouldn't Necessarily Be Across The Street.
What I mean is this: If you are selling furniture in Mombasa it is always a good idea to get your inspiration from someone selling furniture in Nairobi. That way if you borrow ideas from them, people aren't likely to notice since you are in totally different markets. Don't be afraid of copying your competition. However vague that may sound, there are really no new ideas under the sun.
Now head over to your favourite search engine and start looking at your competitors websites take note of what they are doing well. Then discuss with your web designer on how you can implement them on your website.
